What to expect at Silent Dragon School of Kung Fu and Tai Chi

As a beginning student at Silent Dragon schools, you will receive some of the most knowledgeable internal/external training in the country.

On the very first night, you will be able to perform very powerful kicks and strikes. Power strikes are not rocket science, nor do they require you to be "in shape," although our classes will give you a very powerful, flexible, toned body with dense, usable musculature.

Most schools tell you that it takes months, or even years to produce these results, and they are right-for them. What makes us different?

We have taken the time and effort to learn the pre-20th century martial arts, with methods and curriculum that were closely held secrets only a few years ago, and some that still are. Then we made a point of finding ways to rapidly teach those methods to beginning Americans, resulting in outstanding results in terms of health, fitness, power, and internal strength.

I'm not telling you it's easy, but I am telling you that even below average physical specimens can and generally do rapidly change their physical appearance and composition, as well as learn to fight like a buzz saw.

OUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

We are not medieval Asians. The average beginner is willing to take two or three classes per week, for a total of three to five hours. This is an excellent goal and will produce the beginning student's desired results. Within those time strictures, I have found ways to introduce ideas and physical concepts that enable a beginner to maximize his own progress. Students are given access to more extended class time if they desire.

We make a point of removing all cultish and mind controlling behavior, such as exotic costumes, titles, and ceremonies. I have managed schools in the commercial manner, but prefer to help my students free themselves and their minds, rather than take advantage of their inexperience with Asian thought to make money or manipulate them unfairly. My ego is plenty big enough without making all my friends and student bow to me and call me by some esoteric title.

TEACHING CONCEPTS

We use the idea of "the finger pointing out the path." I represent the finger, not the path itself, and I can only help you understand your own unique way. You must walk your path, and it must be your path, not mine. I can advise you, but cannot walk your walk, and I refuse to pretend to. If you need a hero to worship, this is not the right school for you. The idea that I can teach you anything is false, you can only teach yourself. If you will remember back to when you learned to read or do arithmetic, you will understand that this is so.

This is an adult school, and I insist upon surrounding myself with adults. Most of my students are in their 20's 30's and 40's, and have wives and kids and jobs and such.. I welcome teen agers, and expect them to access their inner adult. Most can and do; otherwise they leave. We do not act in a foolishly macho manner, boasting and quarreling are not the way adults genuinely act, regardless of what is portrayed in bad movie and television scripts.

OUR ATTITUDE

We are friendly, courteous, and gentle with each other and especially with beginners. Our curriculum is very powerful, and careless behavior can and eventually will result in a bad accident or in bad feelings which will also result in a bad outcome. Nobody has an "attitude,' or "won't work with" anyone else. We all support each other all the way. This level of material requires responsibility. While our training has some elements of a hobby, it is not a toy, and treating it foolishly is simply dangerous.

SAFETY

There has never been a serious injury in any Silent Dragon school. One of the main jobs of the teacher is to monitor all students all the time in classes. If someone is drags in from work or is otherwise not 100 %, we will ensure that his partner is similarly "low energy" that night. Conversely, we put the high energy students together. However, our training brings internal energy to the surface, so almost always a student is feeling much better after only a few minutes. Our classes are designed in accordance with traditional Chinese medical theory: you will always leave with more energy than you came in with. Part of your training will be in Traditional Chinese Medicine, both in self healing and in healing others. This includes energy work, massage, acupressure, herbalism, and other practical and theoretical knowledge.

HOW DOES CLASS WORK?

We don't do push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, or other western calisthenics that have no bearing on Kung Fu. Instead we have a seamless program in that our warmup consists of strikes against focus pads, which warms and strengthens the muscles, tendons, and ligaments as well as teaching power punching (and NOBODY hits harder than we do), then, when the muscles are warmed, we kick against airshields, which stretches the body, strengthens the legs, and teaches power kicking. We almost always strike or kick full power against a heavy target to imbue an understanding of distance, timing, power, and proper mechanics.

Professional boxers, Muy Thai Boxers, wrestlers, and other prize fighters work out at least 20 hours a week; Shaolin monks work out for 30 hours or more. We have to pack as much martial training as possible into a much more limited time. All of our exercises have to do at least double duty.

Once the body's central core is warmed, we work on controlled fighting drills that allow for spontaneous and imaginative "play" within strict safety guidelines, as well as promoting health, pumping up the immune system, and improving mental function and hand-eye coordination. These include push hands or sticky hands, close quarters grappling and floor grappling, distance and timing exercises, or whatever seems interesting that night. We have a large curriculum and extensive outside knowledge; we feel it important that our students have an opportunity to be exposed to all sorts of knowledge. Many schools are insistent on keeping their styles "pure," not realizing that almost all styles go back no more than a few decades. Our style hangs together and is not threatened by a student learning something new or "from outside the system."

We also make extensive use of the Chinese exercise programs to produce consistently strong and fit students.

WELCOME

We welcome beginners to our classes. We work pretty hard, but, as I have alluded to before, we treat you like an adult, and encourage you to slow down or even sit when you are tired (and you will get tired, or I'm not doing my job.) This isn't boot camp and I'm not a drill instructor.

Most schools (I know because I have taught for them) have a limited number of techniques, so everyone, big or small, tall or short, athletic or not, learns the same thing.

We have a great deal of material. You will see hundreds of different moves and many concepts in the first few weeks at our school. We hope to find only two or three that are perfect for you, and then help you work those extensively until you have a viable fighting style.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE?

About half of my students have previous experience. I feel it is arrogant to demand that these hardworking people "empty their cup." If you have something that works, that's fantastic. I bet I can help you improve it drastically, probably on the first night. We aim for nothing less than practicality, so if your side kick isn't quite the way mine is, no problem. None of my other students have side kicks just like mine either. I don't aim to produce clones, but good students. I don't teach you kung fu, I teach you how to learn kung fu.
